OTTAWA – June 2, 2010 – The Canadian Real Estate Association (CREA) has lowered its forecast for home sales via the Multiple Listing Service® (MLS®) Systems of Canadian real estate Boards and Associations. The revision reflects a weaker than expected start to the year in British Columbia, and recent developments that pulled forward the timing as to when sales are expected to ease in other provinces. CREA’s previous national forecast was heavily influenced by British Columbia and Ontario forecast trends, and this remains the case in the revised forecast

Resale housing forecast revised

Homebuyers have more choice heading into the busy spring buying season, with new supply in Canada’s resale housing market setting a record for the month of March. While resale housing demand remains strong, rising numbers of new listings are resulting in a more balanced national resale housing market.

Resale market sees nearly 100,000 homes listed for sale in March

OTTAWA – February 8, 2010 – The Canadian Real Estate Association has revised its forecast for home sales via the MLS® Systems of Canadian real estate boards in 2010, and extended the forecast to 2011. With Canadian economic growth rebounding from the recession, the unusually severe decline in sales activity in early 2009 is not expected to recur in 2010.  Annual activity in 2010 is forecast to be well above the previous year’s level as a result.

Resale housing forecast extended to 2011

Existing home sales activity reached the highest level ever for the month of December, according to statistics released by The Canadian Real Estate Association. Strong demand in the second half of 2009, especially in the fourth quarter, pushed annual sales above 2008 levels

2009 resale housing market ends on a high note

National consumer confidence ended the year 2009 on a stronger footing compared to pre-recession levels, despite having edged down slightly the fourth quarter compared to the third quarter. According to the Conference Board of Canada’s index of consumer confidence, confidence eased slightly in the fourth quarter for the first time in three quarterly periods. The decrease in confidence reflects weakening sentiment about making major purchases

Canada National consumer confidence continued to improve for the third consecutive quarter in the third quarter of 2009, according to the Conference Board of Canada’s index of consumer confidence. Consumer sentiment is up from the end of 2008, and now stands above pre-recession levels

The Bank of Canada held its benchmark overnight lending rate steady at 0.25 per cent at its setting on September 10th, 2009. The trend-setting Bank rate, which is set 0.25 percentage points above the overnight lending rate, remains at 0.5 per cent. The Bank said that, in line with its expectations, aggressive policy stimulus and the stabilization of global financial markets are supporting the beginnings of a recovery in Canada and elsewhere

Bank of Canada keeps interest rates on hold

OTTAWA – August 27, 2009 – MLS® home sales were much stronger than expected in the second quarter of 2009, with activity having climbed throughout the quarter and into July. The remarkable recovery of resale housing has prompted a change to the MLS® home sales forecast issued by The Canadian Real Estate Association for 2009 and 2010.
